COLLEGE OR BRANCH: A Typical dilemma of Indian high school graduates

Note : Here I’ve written about students who are going to pursue engineering in varsity but other course students can also relate to this.

One should never choose anything in their life according to someone else, just take advices from different people then analyse your situation practically and choose what you think is right and go for it.

Here are my two cents:-

First understand what kind of role these 2 things play in one’s life.

COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY:

The most important aspect of college is your peers, with whom you went college and what is the position of university in market. These two things define the value of your degree and your time in long run.

A person creates network in university life and that network will affect most of your work after graduation whether you go for Entrepreneurship or Job, smart people in your network will surely be beneficial for you in long rung. You can surely expand your network after graduation but my point is that it is easier to do this in university and it’ll take time after graduation to expand your network and time is everything in the game. Never underestimate the power of proximity.

Proximity is power

- Tony Robbins

And the name of your college will surely helps you to get internships and I don’t think I need to mention benefits of successful and big alumni network.

BRANCH OR MAJOR:

Engineering is about skills and innovative thinking and if you’re not enjoying your subjects then it’s hard for you to acquire any useful skill and then your university name or network won’t help you to get anything, it is just waste of time and money .

Always remember:

X * Y = success

X = your capabilities + your skills + your knowledge

Y = network + university name + resources

And if X = 0 then you get (0 * something =0)

Now coming back to the topic, broadly there are two type of students:

A → Knows his/her interest clearly.

B → Not sure about his/her interest.

If you’re in category A then go for branch without any second thought, today you can find many useful courses online and learn things, but university shouldn’t be neglected completely, find a balance and give more priority to branch.

But if you’re in category B then go for better college and explore different fields and better university will give you better opportunities to do this and I think more students occur in category B.

There is one more category of students who wants to do research work and are interested in higher studies, they should go for better college even if you don’t get your desired branch because good universities have flexible curriculum, good professors, studious environment.

When you will go for higher studies professor recommendations , university name will surely help you.

In the end it’s your life, your career and you should make the choice.

Write down all the available options with pros and cons, your priorities and future plans on a piece of paper, analyse it and then choose according to it.
